People often say that religious belief in Britain has declined to astonishingly low levels in the last half century or so. But where are the numbers to either back that up or disprove it? Well there is one website out there with a whole host of statistics covering all aspects of religious belief in Britain, going back (depending on the specific question) over 80 years, and that is the British Religion in Numbers website.

As a Brit (a Scot, to be specific) with an American partner, it still astonishes me that even after a year of being together we regularly find ourselves talking at cross purposes due to everyday things having different names on the opposite sides of the Atlantic. Today it was vests and waistcoats.

One4all, the universal high street gift card scheme, have stopped giving the option of swapping (for a fee) their One4all cards for a pre-loaded “virtual” visa card that could be used with any retailer rather than the limited number of high street retailers that are members of the scheme.

English Heritage membership gets you free entry to the dozens of historic sites and properties across England managed by the English Heritage organisation. But if you travel more widely within the UK it also gets you free or discounted entry to historic sites in Scotland managed by Historic Scotland and those in Wales managed by Cadw.

To the untutored eye, this mysterious half-inch metal ball (see figure 1 linked to at foot of this page), found in a field in France, looks innocuous. It could be part of some item of farm machinery – a large ball bearing maybe. In fact it is a relic of the First World War, a shrapnel ball from an artillery shell.

Tumbling down the Tunisian hillside in terraces of warm sandstone lies the magnificent remains of one of Rome’s outpost cities, on the edge of the Empire. And one of the best preserved Roman cities of North Africa too – so well preserved that it is rightfully listed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

My visit in 2004 to the port of Saint-Valery-en-Caux in Normandy, France, where the 51st Highland Division was forced to surrender to the Germans in 1940 when evacuation failed.
